A2 Biology Field Trip to Pembrokeshire, Wales

Nine students and one member of staff set out on Friday 23rd September 2005 for the first ever A level biology field trip from Saint Michael's College.Students were able to take part in investigations on zonation on a rocky seashore, succession in sand dunes and the effect on diversity of management in deciduous woodland, all important parts of the A2 syllabus.
Pembrokeshire is in a truly beautiful part of the UK and so students were able to learn about sampling techniques and identification surrounded by sunshine, blue skies and sparkling sea.

Our students were paired with an independent boys school from Derby so they were able to work alongside these very pleasant, young British students.
The course involved long days starting at 9 a.m. in the laboratory, followed by a day in the field and finishing at p.m.
after analysing and writing up results recorded during the day.
On our final day we had the excitement of examining our mammal traps in which we had successfully caught both wood mice and field voles, followed by a fantastic walk along the coast.
During the evening, between finishing work and lights out, our students were able to relax and socialise with students from other schools. The food was excellent and the accommodation was good. Our students approached everyday with enthusiasm and worked hard to complete their tasks. They looked after one another and were a pleasure to be with. I was proud to be their teacher!
